Rural enterprise is an essential element of rural development and is both a way of attracting new populations to the countryside and sustaining existing populations.

There are many challenges facing rural enterprise, including poor access to infrastructure, lack of high-speed Internet access, isolation, and a dispersed population lacking major educational and cultural centres. In combination these prevent successful participation for rural communities in a digital world.
The Digital Economy strives to enhance rural business networking and provide fast broadband links – for business and social enterprises – to rural communities to enable use of digital technology.

The enterprise and culture challenges addressed by the dot.rural team include the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of rural business networks and rural enterprises through improved co-operation and understanding of technology use.
